Synopsis

Being the chosen one isn’t always a good thing…

Oscar Tundale is not a hero. Anxious, indecisive, and awkward, he can barely get through a normal day. Now he’s about to find out monsters are real. Oscar’s friends: brave, stubborn Zara, and hyperactive, paranoid Marcus, might help discover what hunts him, and unravel the truth about the handsome doctor he pines for. But only heroes can save the world, so maybe the best Oscar can hope for is to not end it by accident.

The LESSER KNOWN MONSTERS series is a dark queer fantasy featuring diverse characters on a found family adventure. Perfect for fans of horror and paranormal romance who seek LGBTQ+ heroes.

My Thoughts

I adore unexpected heroes in a book and I loved Oscar and his friends.

Oscar is such a sweet guy.  He’s normal.  Often, protagonists in books are portrayed as glamourous, genius, beautiful etc.  but Oscar is just…well…normal – which is great!  He is such a gentle and unassuming character with the same feelings and thoughts as most of us.  He’s easy to identify with and I adored the way he treat his friends and others.  Zara and Marcus complete the trio with their contrasting personalities and protectiveness over Oscar.

I really enjoyed reading about characters who are LGBQTA+ written in this way.  It’s a huge part of their personalities but the plot is not heavily reliant on this and there isn’t any drama around sexuality and identification.  It’s just gay people going about their everyday lives (well, almost everyday), developing romance and relationships in an everyday way.  I love it!

Michaelson has created a world that is begins like ours, and then there is the introduction of paranormal and other-worldly characters and it just seems to fit so well.  The use of fact files to introduce different is really fun and helpful too.  It adds to the realistic feel of the plot and drew me into things even more.

The mystery/ investigation aspect of the plot was so much fun to read.  Very lighthearted with an element of suspense without being too intense.  It’s perfect for NA or older YA readers.

This book is a lot of fun to read and a good introduction to a new series.  I enjoyed reading this and would definitely like to read the rest of the series.
