Advocatus by A. R. Turner – Blog Tour

A huge thanks to Dave and crew over at #TheWriteReads for organising this book tour and to A. R. Turner for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

Advocatus tells the tale of Felix, a junior lawyer with one last case before he can strike out on his own.

His client? A terrifying magical warlord accused of, amongst other horrifying crimes, two counts of Attempted Genocide (and six counts of Theft). His plea? Innocent, of course! All in a day’s work for Felix.

Psychic frogs, downtrodden goblins, time-travelling wizards, and a whole host of other magical defendants become his caseload as Felix begins trying to make a name for himself as a successful lawyer in a world rife with sorcery.

The biggest case of his life: defending humanity in front of Habeus, the God of Justice himself. Lose, and it’s all over. Not just for him, but for the whole of mankind.

My Thoughts

Advocatus is one of those books that I may not have picked up without a blog tour email landing in my inbox and I am so pleased that it did.  This is the main reason I love blog tours, they introduce me to so many new authors and novels that I may not necessarily be drawn to whilst browsing bookshops/Amazon.

Advocatus is such a fun and unique gem of a book and it deserves so much love because it’s just a joyous, funny and pleasurable read.  The characters are cleverly crafted and the world building is so much like our own with a lot of added extras.  Everything just fits together so well that it’s hard to believe you are reading about a fantasy world at times and everything seems ‘normal’.

I’ve never come across a book with a similar plot before and I think it’s so clever combining law with a fantasy world.  Lunchers Law firm are such a great bunch of people and they always represent the underdog or downtrodden.  Felix is recruited to work there after losing a very difficult case (but putting up a huge fight) and it is here he makes friends with various people/beings including Yetty – a co-worker and clients Helda, Furbo and Racelsus (who became a favourite).  When Felix is approached by a celestial to be the legal representation for humankind – humanity is at stake and only Felix and his friends can save them.

There are so many themes running through this novel and they were all really cleverly portrayed.  Lots of bullying and incidents of ‘racisim’ between species, poverty, judging others and friendship.  Although it is written in a light-hearted manner, it really does make me think the more I reflect on the book.

In-between chapters of the main plot, there are files from other cases that Felix has tried and this really highlights the way this world works and also helps to develop the character of Felix.

I honestly cannot express in words how awesome this book is and I am so excited to read the next installment in the series.

Author Bio – A. R. Turner

Born on the Isle of Wight in the south of England, Alex now lives in South Wales with his wife and cat, where he divides his time between reading, writing and board games. Having always wanted to read a book about a lawyer in a fantasy world (but never successfully finding one), Alex finally realised that there was nothing else for it: he was going to have to write it himself. His other passion in life is a board game called Blood Bowl. He talks about it often in his podcast and one day hopes to compete in the Chaos Cup or other big global tournaments.
