My Thoughts

Octavia Bloom and the Missing Key is such a cute middle grade fantasy books and it will leave young readers delighted and wanting more form the hero.

The setting of an old castle provides such a great starting atmosphere for this type of story.  Dusty rooms, an old, forbidden attic, hidden secrets all add to the adventurous and magical feel of the story.  Quickly the adventure moves to Fairyland which is exquisitely brought to live in vivid detail and description.  As this is a series, I cannot wait to explore these words further in future books.

The characters are really fun and interesting.  Octavia is head strong and adventurous which contrasts well with her sister and cousins.  I loved the gran and aunt characters too and how the keeper of the key is usually feisty and high spirited.  It was easy to fall in love with the Blooms.

As this is written for younger children, it moves at a really quick pace which keeps the reader’s interest and doesn’t linger on things for too long on anything.  The plot is full of magic and fantasy with talking animals and the right amount of danger for the target age.

Any aged reader will delight in this story and it’s wonderful to lose yourself in for a few hours.  I cannot wait to join the Blooms on their next adventure.
