Synopsis

If the murderer you’re tracking is a vampire, then you want a vampire detective.
Just maybe not this one.

It’s not that Jack Valentine is bad at her job. The youngest member of Oxford’s Seekers has an impressive track record, but she also has an impressive grudge against the local baron, Killian Drake.
When a human turns up dead on May Morning, she’s determined to pin the murder on Drake. The problem is that none of the evidence points to him. Instead, it leads Jack into a web of conspiracy involving the most powerful people in the country, people to whom Jack has no access. But she knows someone who does.
To get to the truth, Jack will have to partner up with her worst enemy. As long as she can keep her cool, Drake will point her to the ringleaders, she’ll find the murderer and no one else will have to die.
Body bags on standby.

May Day is the first book in Josie Jaffrey’s Seekers series, an urban fantasy series set in Oxford, England.

My Thoughts

I love watching vampire themed movies and box sets so I have no idea why I rarely read them.  I think I always worry that I don’t have enough background information etc. to follow a story without the visuals of TV.  However, I was worried over nothing.  May Day was an easy plot to follow and all the background and information I needed was in there for me early in the book.

The setting is Oxford – exactly as we know it but there’s a slight different.  Silvers (vampires) exist and live amongst us.  They even have their own police force (seekers) who are responsible for ensuring that Silvers stay within their rules.  This book was perfect for a beginner’s vampire read as bringing the vampires world into my world where everything is familiar made it so easy to follow and become immersed in.  I found it fascinating to experience that world through their eyes and by the end of the book I’d become convinced that this was actually real life.

Jack valentine is a captivating character.  So many flaws and yet there’s something extremely alluring about her.  On the outside is a vampire who is tough, unrelenting and doesn’t give a @*£? But seeing things through her eyes also gives her a sense of vulnerability and imperfection.  I couldn’t help but really like her.

The chemistry between Jack and Killian was there from the very beginning and just oozed off the page and the romance/sexual aspect of their relationship just added to the intensity of the plot.

I cannot wait to read the second instalment.

Author Bio – Josie Jaffrey

I live in Oxford, UK, with my husband and two cats (Sparky and Gussie), who graciously permit human cohabitation in return for regular feeding and cuddles. The resulting cat fluff makes it difficult for me to wear black, which is largely why I gave up being a goth. Although the cats are definitely worth it, I still miss my old wardrobe.

When I’m not writing, I work as a lawyer specialising in commercial and intellectual property law.

I love to hear from readers, so please do get in touch through my website or via Twitter.

Thank you for reading!
