My Thoughts

The opening really packs a punch and completely drew me in.  There’s only a hint to what has happened but we begin with Kate and her son fleeing their house in Leeds and starting a new, idyllic life in Scotland.  But, all that is about to change when a person from Kate’s past appears who knows more than she’d like him to.

Things I love in thrillers:

– Dual timelines

– Unreliable characters

– A lot of suspense and tension

And all these things are in The Lie She Told.

The dual timeline is great for building suspense and tension and I was racing through to get back to the other time.  It also contrasts Kate’s previous life with her more idyllic life and gives the reader more of a shock.  Each place is brought to life by the vivid description and is well crafted to support and depict Kate’s feelings during that time.

I love/hate when I cannot figure out a character’s motivations or truth.  The title made me unsettled in the sense that I felt something was off and maybe there were things left to reveal.  This provided a lot of suspense and made it so difficult to put the book down.

This is a fast paces thriller with some unexpected twists and turns along the way and some sweet characters such as Jack, Kate’s boss and friend, to balance the darker moments.  It is a fantastic debut novel and I cannot wait to read more from this author.
