My Thoughts

Whether it’s writing fiction or non-fiction, Lexi Rees just gets kids.  She seems to understand what they will enjoy, what will entertain and delight them and by teaming with Sasha Mullen together they have produced another invaluable and creative book that children will enjoy but also highly benefit from.  

BElieve in YOUrself is jam-packed full of tools, strategies, tricks and activities to encourage self-confidence, self-belief and mindfulness in young people although to be honest – it words for adults too.  There are 7 different sections to work through; Recognise your strengths, Zen your space, Master your mind, Deal with distractions, Train your brain, Harness your senses and Become a happiness magnet. 

Each section builds a different set of skills and work well if worked through in order however can be used as stand alone to tackle specific worries or things you may be struggling with at any one time.  There’s a good balance of strategies and tips to use as well as sheets to fill in and complete.  One of my favourite features is how there’s a child friendly explanation of the ‘brain science’ but using the correct names for the different areas etc.  It’s a brilliant way to encourage children to better understand themselves and their emotions and how their brain works. 

This is such a brilliant book to use for all ages in all circumstances.  I think many adults don’t always know how to calm and sooth our brains and boost our own self confidence and lots of the tips in here are still highly relevant, regardless of age.  The sheets are so useful to provide visual prompts and activities to support learning too. 

As a teacher I cannot wait to share this with colleagues and pupils in September.  We have just begun to introduce a scheme called Zones of regulation to support our children (and staff) to develop the language of emotion and the strategies needed to help regulate them in a healthy way therefore encouraging a more positive mental health and resilience.  This book and the tools inside will really help to support and reinforce that programme as well providing some food for thought and mindfulness for children who may be struggling at different times.

A superb addition to any school, or child’s bookshelf and perfect to support children (and adults) who struggle with emotional regulation, being calm, self-confidence or self-belief.  It’s an invaluable tool.

Lexi Rees was born in Scotland but now lives down south. She writes action-packed adventures brim full of witch-doctors, fortune-tellers, warriors and smugglers, combining elemental magic with hints of dystopia. She also writes fun activity books for children.

Sasha has always had a passion for adventure. Be it experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of far flung continents to exploring her hometown of West London.
