A Cut For a Cut (Detective Kate Young #2) by Carol Wyer – Blog Tour

Today I am honoured to be joining the blog tour  for A Cut for a Cut by Carol Wyer. Thanks to Emma at https://damppebbles.com/damppebbles-blog-tours/ for organising this tour and to Carol Wyer and Amazon Publishing for a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

DI Kate Young can’t trust anybody. Not even herself.

In the bleak countryside around Blithfield Reservoir, a serial murderer and rapist is leaving a trail of bloodshed. His savage calling card: the word ‘MINE’ carved into each of his victims.

DI Kate Young struggles to get the case moving—even when one of the team’s own investigators is found dead in a dumpster. But Kate is battling her own demons. Obsessed with exposing Superintendent John Dickson and convinced there’s a conspiracy running deep in the force, she no longer knows who to trust. Kate’s crusade has already cost her dearly. What will she lose next?

When her stepsister spills a long-buried secret, Kate realises she’s found the missing link—now she must prove it before the killer strikes again. With enemies closing in on all sides, she’s prepared to do whatever it takes to bring them down. But time is running out, and Kate’s past has pushed her to the very edge. Can she stop herself from falling?

My Thoughts

My word!  Carol Wyer is pulling no punches with this series.  It’s deliciously dark, the protagonist (Detective Kate Young) is well and truly mentally tortured and I love every excruciating minute of it.

If you haven’t met Kate Young before I highly recommend that you begin with An Eye For An Eye as it does lay a lot of character groundwork and some themes are continued into book 2.  However, that said, this can be read as a stand alone novel as things referred to have enough explanation to make sense. You’d be missing a treat if you didn’t read in order though.

DI Kate Young has so much going on in her life.  She’s trying to make amends with her previously estranged stepsister, deal with the death of her husband and delve into a conspiracy which could rock both her world, and the that of her profession.  Obviously this isn’t enough and she’s also thrown into a new case of a serial murdered and rapist.

All of this contributes to Kate being a fairly unstable, but still brilliant, character.  She’s juggling so much physically and mentally and I felt as though I was constantly on edge, waiting for her to break.  I wanted to take her under my wing and look after her, protect her from everything and herself but I couldn’t.  I became so invested in her.

The plot is edge of the seat stuff and at times I was holding my breath.  There are so many elements that there’s never a quiet moment.  Carol obviously planned every bit of this novel with precision and it all weaves together nicely so there really isn’t a feeling that you’re reading several sub plots at once.

A superb detective thriller and I am so excited to read the next instalment.
