Thanks to Ann Cater of Random Things Tours for organising this blog tour and to Gillian Harvey and Orion for a copy of this book in exchange for a honest and unbiased review.
It’s time to shake things up a little…
Clare Bailey’s life is perfect. Successful career, loving husband, two kids and a gorgeous townhouse. At least, that’s how it looks like from the outside.
In fact, she’s never felt more invisible. Her boss barely remembers her name, her husband is distracted by his new TV job and her daughter has never found her more embarrassing!
But when she’s given a chance to turn her life upside-down she wonders whether she should risk everything she loves for a life that’s more than just ‘perfect on paper’…?
I immediately became immersed in Claire’s life and felt very drawn to her as a character and the writing style was just perfect.
Gillian has summed up modern family life for many people. Working parents who are successful but have started to drift apart, a husband going through some kind of mid-life crisis, teens who disrespect the house and treat it like a hotel – I’m pretty sure most middle-aged people can relate to at least some of this.
In the beginning Claire was a bit of a doormat. She kind of held everything together whilst almost being invisible to her family and in her workplace. I was almost cheering when a random event led to a wonderful opportunity for her and I loved watching her change and grow whilst she still navigated family and working life.
I laughed throughout this novel but also felt uplifted and moved by it. It’s such a wonderful and joyous book to spend a few hours with.
Gillian Harvey is definitely an author to keep an eye out for in the future and I cannot wait to go and read her debut novel after reading this. Highly recommended for lovers of ‘women’s contemporary fiction’ looking for a light hearted and uplifting read.
