A murdered woman…

When the body of a young woman is found in a local park, DC Maggie Jamieson knows she’s dealing with no ordinary killer.  The murder victim has been disfigured; her outfit changed to resemble someone else.  Someone Maggie knows all too well…her close friend Dr Kate Moloney.

A determined detective…

Maggie is determined to keep her friend safe, but with Kate already struggling with a threatening stalker, Maggie now fears Kate’s life is in real danger.  Who else would want to harm Kate and why else would the killer be turning his victims into exact replicas – his living dolls?

Can Maggie find the depraved killer?  Or will Kate become his next living doll?

My Thoughts

Dead Perfect is book 3 in the Maggie Jamieson series however does work as a stand alone novel. I would say you get a much better understanding of the recurring characters, particularly Maggie if you read them in order. Check out my review of the previous 2 books below;

Dead Inside and Dead Wrong

Dead Perfect manages to capture the balance between the depraved and disturbed mind of a killer and ensuring the reader develops empathy and a deep connection with the victims and police team so they experience every terrifying moment they go through.

Maggie has a new case.  A serial killer kidnapping women and committing dark and disturbing acts on them before disposing of their bodies.  It’s these cases that she usually excels at with her talent for problem solving and making links nobody else spots. But, this case has her more riled than usual as this as the victims have been altered to resemble her friend and colleague Kate Moloney and she’s not as close with Nathan who is now her boss.  Can Maggie keep her cool head and find the murderer before another victim falls foul?

Dead Perfect is fast paced and I flew through it.  It’s gripping and chilling and has a great balance of police procedural and the personal lives of the main characters.  Maggie is real.  She is excellent at her job but sometimes struggles to work with teams, she has grudges and personal issues, and she is so much more than her job.  Holten does a brilliant job of bringing her characters to life and I became completely invested in Maggie and all aspects of her life.   Her anxiety and building stress really came across and I was right there beside her every step of the way.

I love how Holten sets such a realistic stage by including the various agencies that would be involved in cases like this one.  They generally have a great working relationship across them all and I found the different roles and the relationships between them all fascinating to read about.

Dead Perfect is a chilling and gripping thriller that balances character development with police procedure brilliantly.  Highly recommended for dark crime lovers.
