Synopsis

Essy Havers is good at finding things. Her company specialises in helping clients track down anything, from missing china pieces to rare vintage clothing. But now Essy has something more important to find: herself.

Essy has always been curious about her mother’s secret past and her Cornish roots. So, when the opportunity arises, she hops on a plane in Tennessee and ends up in Herring Bay in Cornwall; the village where her mother grew up.

But once there, she’s mystified by the reactions of the villagers when they realise who she is. Was Essy’s decision to visit Cornwall a mistake, or will it lead to a summer she’ll never forget?

My Thoughts

Essy doesn’t know much about her mother’s past but when an opportunity to mix work with a little investigating arises, she hot foots over the sea to Cornwall where she is hoping to discover more.  Confused by the reception she receives as the locals figure out who she is, she becomes determined to figure out the events from the past and make amends but can she win over the people of Herring Bay or should some things be well left alone?

Angela Britnell is one of my absolute favourite writes of feel good romance with wonderful characters and this new novel does not disappoint. And the cover is just adorable.

Essy and Ruan are just lovely characters and Angela always has this knack of making the reader feel completely involved in a character’s life.  The banter and chemistry between the main characters was a delight and even the background ensemble are written with such detail and thought that despite a small role, the bring a to the story.  The backstory for the characters really adds depth and sucks the reader into their experiences and I loved that the focus on this was Ruan rather than Essy.

In addition to the romantic aspect of this novel, I loved the gentle mystery about what happened to their parents.  Throughout the book layers of the past are revealed giving the reader a tantalising taste of what had happened.  I enjoyed speculating and guessing throughout the novel.

Yet another absolutely smashing novel from Angela Britell with loveable and realistic characters and a great plot to weave a romance into. Highly recommended.
