If there are two sides to every story, someone is always lying…

Jack: Three words to describe my wife: Beautiful. Ambitious. Unforgiving.
Anna: I only need one word to describe my husband: Liar.

When a woman is murdered in Blackdown village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Anna’s ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper, is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation.

Someone is lying, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.

My Thoughts

This is my first novel by Alice Feeney and oh boy it won’t be my last.  His and Hers is a cleverly woven plot of deceit, twists and lies that kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through.

This is the story of a woman’s body found in the woods told by a divorced couple Anna and Jack with a few scattered chapters from the killer.  What’s interesting is that all the chapters have a similar feel to them, it’s difficult to tie the narrator to a known character as there are elements of different characters in there.

The novel is narrated from the perspectives of Anna Andrews and her ex husband.  Both narrators seemingly have things to hide, making them unreliable and not trustworthy at all.  The short chapters build tension throughout the novel and the first person narrative really helps the reader climb inside the characters and see things from their perspective.

Neither Anna or Jack or completely likable which makes the game of guessing very cleverly written and much more fun.  The more you learn about them, the more I found myself pulled in two directions.  I did develop some empathy towards the characters but as darker things were revealed it became hard to know what to feel.As I didn’t feel any affinity with either character, I was suspicious of both and my thoughts about things were constantly changing.  Constant red herrings, possible clues and more twists than a game of 21, this novel kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

A darkly twisted novel that will keep you reading until the very end.
