The Fifty 5pm Fictions Collection by Morgen Bailey – Blog Tour

BLOG TOUR (7).png

A huge thanks to Morgen Bailey for allowing me to read her brilliant collection of stories in return for an honest and unbiased review and to Sarah Hardy for organising this blog tour.

0 5pm Collection EB

Synopsis

This collection comprises five volumes of fifty stories written from a variety of prompts and published on Morgen’s blog: http://www.morgenbailey.wordpress.com, where you can still read the list of prompts – a story a day for nearly a year.
In this book there are stories of revenge, luck and misfortune, sharp edges, sticky red hands, no faded circle of skin, family heirlooms, Chelsea buns, and alien hums.  We meet a generous aunt, men in uniform, a fan of Hawaiian shirts, untidy teenagers, characters looking to improve themselves, a young girl with wings, a modern-day Cleopatra, and a curious fortune teller.

These stories all go to show what can be done with a prompt, a few hours, and a colourful imagination.

My Thoughts

Morgen Bailey is fast becoming one of my favourite authors whether I fancy a brilliant rom-com or or something a little more sinister she is proving that there are no end to her talents.  Recently I have been swamped with work, kids and reading for tours and as much as I love it and I’m not complaining, it was a welcome break to dip in and out of these entertaining and thought provoking stories.

As always, Ms Bailey covers a wide range of genres and themes in her short stories and never fails to hit the spot – whatever your spot is.  IN this collection there are numerous stories providing humour and tears, warming your heart or sending the chills right through you.  Some of them are just there to indulge in and enjoy, getting lost in the moment and others provoke more contemplation regarding events surrounding the stories.

As I was reading I listed my favourites but the list became too long to include so I’ve just provided a sample of the ones I really loved.

The innocent brick – I loved how this one really highlights the consequences of seemingly innocent actions.  It had one of those haunting endings that stays with you.

Stuffed – A one paragraph story about sinister intentions

Exotic spice – This story had a very funny but not funny arcs.  I was chuckling about this one for a while.

Stage Left, Henry! – This reminded me of my theatre group and had an amusing finish.

Valentine’s Day – Simply brilliant and hilarious!

Overall this is a superb collection to occupy those few minutes we may find spare in-between life’s interruptions but don’t really have the chance to indulge in a full novel.

  1. Thank you SO much, Kerry. You’re so kind. I’m thrilled and quite speechless… That doesn’t happen very often. 🙂 I read out Valentine’s Day when I do talks at the Women’s Institutes I visit and it always gets a chuckle or three.
