Synopsis

Such a small parcel shouldn’t cause experienced smugglers much trouble. But, as Finn and Aria discover, this is the most dangerous delivery of their lives. Battered by storms and chased across the globe by an evil warlord, they enlist the help of a strange witch-doctor. Together, they struggle to solve the mystery while the fate of an ancient civilisation depends on them, and time is running out …

Eternal Seas is a thrilling adventure for children aged seven to twelve.

My Thoughts

Finn, Aria and their father are smugglers.  They live on a boat and collect and deliver parcels for a living across seas.  One day they are asked to deliver a parcel for a mysterious customer and so begins an adventure that will change their lives forever.

I absolutely adored this audiobook for children aged 7-12 (ish).  I think it’s a brilliant introduction to fantasy writing for young children and I’m sure they’ll love the adventure and pirate feel to the book.

Eternal Seas is set  in a world alike  ours but in the future with differences.  It’s similar enough that children can identify with it but cleverly written to ensure the differences add depth to the story.  The different destinations are described vividly and are really brought to life and the sea storms are very realistic.    The portrayal of powers in this book is different to many that children are aware of and the idea of ancient, magical societies is a great one to explore.

The characters are extremely likable (except the ones you aren’t supposed to like) and I particularly loved Pippin – she was how I imagined a little puppy dog would be if they could talk.

The audio itself was extremely well narrated, by Christopher Dickins, who did a brilliant job of using a range of voices so the characters can be distinguished between easily – I feel this is important for young children who find it more difficult to focus on audio.  Short chapters make it easy to listen to or read in shorter sessions.

This book is great for sharing with a younger child or for older readers to read alone.

Author Bio – Lexi Rees

Lexi Rees grew up in the north of Scotland but now splits her time between London and West Sussex. She still goes back to Scotland regularly though.

Usually seen clutching a mug of coffee, she spends as much time as possible sailing and horse riding, both of which she does enthusiastically but badly.

Her first book, Eternal Seas was written on a boat; the storm described in it was frighteningly real.

  2. That is the first time I’ve heard of a blog tour giving out the audio. I wish we could arc request audible versions. I wonder if it would be cheaper?

Out of curiosity… when you say you the characters were likable except the ones you weren’t supposed to like, were they written well enough to “love to hate them”kind of way?

  3. Awesome! thanks so much 🙂 Glad you enjoyed the narrator Chris Dickins – I was so excited when I first heard his audition tape and all the voices. Pippin was such fun to write – I’m not surprised she sounds a bit like an excited puppy – she did rather have a mind of her own!
