First of all a big thank you To Rachel at Random Resources for organising the book tour. And a big thank you to Bernice Bloom and Gold Medal Publishers for a review copy of this novel in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
Mary Brown receives an invitation to a funeral. But she has absolutely no idea who the deceased is. She’s told that he invited her on his deathbed, and he’s very keen for her to attend, so she heads off to a dilapidated old farm house in a remote part of Wales. When she gets there she discovers that only five other people have been invited to the funeral. None of them knows who he is either.
NO ONE GOING TO THIS FUNERAL HAS EVER HEARD OF THE DECEASED. WHAT IS GOING ON?
Then they are told that they have 20 hours to work out why they have been invited in order to inherit a million pounds.
Who is this guy and why are they there? And what of the ghostly goings on in the ancient old building?
Featuring Mary Brown, star of the Adorable Fat Girl series of books, in her greatest adventure yet.
This is BOOK NINE in the series, but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone book or as part of the series.
First of all, I’m convinced that this book has been written by a friend under a pseudonym as I’m pretty sure Mary Brown is me! We are so alike it’s unbelievable – even the same size.
I signed up for this blog tour quite a while ago and by the time I read the book, I had forgotten the blurb. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series but I will now be working my way through them. I was expecting a comedy about a curvy detective girl but what I got was so much more.
Two stories run through this novel although to be fair, I feel the story of Reginald Carter is by far the main one here. It’s a beautifully told story of an Italian prisoner of war, his family and the kindness of strangers. The story moves at a quick but appropriate pace but it touches on some very sensitive issues. I wanted it to end so I could find out what happened to the character of Reginald/Joe but I didn’t want it to end because it was so wonderful. Even in the darkest parts of his story there was an uplifting sense of happiness and human kindness.
The other story is the one of the six strangers meeting to attend the funeral of a man they have never met. Staying in a quirky Welsh hotel and having only twenty hours to unravel the clues as to why they were chosen, the little group form some interesting bonds and have to do a little detective work to solve the puzzle. This story is a little more light-hearted with an element of gentle suspense and a few amusing moments involving ghostly going ons and egg and cress.
This book made me cry but also gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling inside. It’s not a long read and is easy to read in small chunks. I really recommend this book if you are looking for something uplifting and amusing.
Author Bio –
My name is Bernice Bloom and I write funny novels about a crazy lady called Mary Brown in my ‘Adorable Fat Girl’ series.
Mary is funny, gorgeous and bonkers. She’s also about six stone overweight. When she realises she can’t cross her legs and has trouble bending over to tie her shoelaces without wheezing like an elderly chain-smoker it’s time to take action. But what action? She’s tried every diet under the sun.
This series is the hysterical story of what happens when Mary joins ‘Fat Club’ where she meets a cast of funny characters and one particular man who catches her eye.
The series follows Mary as she goes on safari, on a cruise, to a weekend yoga retreat and on an incredible adventure when she receives a mysterious invitation to a funeral.
The stories are laugh-out-loud funny and will resonate with anyone who has dieted, tried to keep up with any sort of exercise programme or spent 10 minutes in a changing room trying to extricate herself from a way too-small garment that she ambitiously tried on and is now completely stuck in. xx
